It’s high time we recognised some other performers on this site so, more or less at random, I’ve chosen first a former competitive acrobatic gymnastics mens pair based in Ukraine (and occasionally in Germany). They perform excellent routines based closely upon the moves expected of world-class acrobatic gymnasts in competitions.
Dave and I never had the benefit of working our way up through a formal acrobatics gymnstics repertoire – both of us left it far to late in our lives to be contemplating a change to that discipline at around age 16 – and we kind of followed a ‘teach yourself’ route, albeit with a lot of help from some pretty darn good guys that we met up with here in Oak Ridge. We made a few mistakes but, by and large, it does mean that our routines are our own and that we have many unexpected elements in the performance which aren’t so obvious to the guys who have worked their way up by the normal route.
That’s not so say, of course, that we don’t have a little competition with the stuff using beds of nails and so on that we do – I’ve mentioned Steelkast several times (link bottom right!), and I came across these pics of another duo who clearly use the stuff, although I couldn’t find a picture of them doing it directly:
A curious move in which to be brandishing two knives – clearly the bottom guy’s chest is destined for that bed of nails, whilst the knives are perhaps for the ‘knife drop’ on to the abs… these guys, Vladymyr and Vladislav, are two thirds of another Ukrainian act called ‘Tri’ (a girl is also part of the troupe but is not involved with the fakir side). Here are the knives in play again:
Weird costumes, too – I don’t get the idea really.
The former Circus Extreme, with which we used to tour, had us doing all this stuff and also had knife throwers (I was once intimidated into being a target, with no experience whatsoever – it was a kind of honour thing to show I trusted the guy, who I’d never met before. I survived! – he was pretty damn good). And we used to get involved a lot with beds of broken glass, swords, and stuff. I’ve posted about that a while back – twice at least. And, if I dare mention it yet again, you can read about it all too, both in the book which is out now and the one which is forthcoming!
