A Wild Night in the Woods

Dave and I, along with Gary, Zach and the girls (Karen and Clare) have just done a private performance in the woods near a bend in the Clinch River where we have a favourite swimming hole. The usual stuff, duo and four-man acrobatics, our stuff on the bed of nails and bed of glass sustaining the weight of several others, the girls doing their body burning and fire eating. Gary doing his martial arts stuff culminating in the stomach balance on a single spear. Randy and Dan came along for a while and contributed their ladder of swords, knife throwing (at Karen) and ‘darts in the back’. Those two don’t perform as much now but, thankfully, appear to have kept in practice with the knives so that every throw is still a ‘near miss’. Later on, the girls set up fire-walking for any of the punters that wanted a try.

I’ve banged on about nails, glass and fire in previous posts, so we won’t go there again. Let’s just say that fire walking is a lot about understanding the difference between heat and temperature, plus a bit of bravado, and rarely  results in any harm if the fire is properly prepared and the instructions are clearly followed. Dave and I took our turn and, aside from a tiny area of blackened skin, I have nothing to show for it.

So, why did we do our stuff in the woods? All down to our slightly weird friend Cody and his current housemate Adge, who have a ‘basement of fun’ (aka torture chamber!) to which they invite groups of odd people who are into that kind of S&M stuff.

Yep, guys who like to be tied up, or tied down. Guys who like to get whipped, and worse. The ‘punishment doesn’t always take place in secret, dark, dungeons…

..students and college frat houses tend to dish out their punishments in “pulblic” (as here – see the sign!) but, for Cody, it is definitely an undercover pursuit. His place is almost impossible to find even in daylight (deliberately), and he has his parties bussed in under cover of darkness so that even they don’t know where they are. Tied, suspended, weights attached to various body parts (an Adge speciality, frequently imposed on himself ‘because he can’), hot wax… you name it, Cody usually can provide it.

So, with the visiting fetishists duly entertaining each other, our group wandered down through the trees to our usual swimming hole for a middle-of-the-night end-of-summer skinny dip.

…after which, making our way back to our cars and truck past a few guys shackled to trees, we left them to it.

What the rest were doing in the basement I leave to your imagination – although you can find more about our own occasional trips there in both of these books!

And, before anyone jumps to the wrong conclusion, the kids, Leo and Jaymee, were both on sleepovers with their friends. Although they do take a role in our ‘family’ fakir  and acro shows, definitely NOT this one!

So how did you spend your last weekend of the ‘official’ summer?

Glass walking, fire walking – or, maybe just sharing the love…

Good choice!

About tonycavanagh

Born Northampton UK; school Oxford UK and Oak Ridge Tennessee, where I met my wonderful partner Dave, also from UK. Oak Ridge is our main training base for acrobatics and circus stuff, but we also established a base in Wales (UK) to serve us when we are working in Europe. Our 'story', of finding gay love, learning the acrobatics trade and then of how we got shot at during our show (and worse was to follow - just to prove that the risks of being an acrobat are not always the most obvious ones!) are now available in my three books 'Loving the Boy', 'The Power of Love' and 'Against All Odds'. Links available on most blog posts. Actually, waiting for the imminent arrival of the first printed copies was far scarier than anything we do in performance. A fourth book - not about us but exploring the sadness of a gay Native American boy denied his true identity - is currently with an agent for evaluation. watch for 'Let The Future Find Me' in due time. And now to book five... another boy, another quest... seems its always boys...
