Welcoming the ‘Dutch Boy’

His name is Onne and, like Dave and I, he showed up in Oak Ridge as an exile from Europe, in his case The Netherlands (Delft, he tells us: graduated Ph.D. from the Technical University there in some nuclear stuff and now he has a job here in the government nuclear lab, just like my dad did originally and Dave’s still does).

And, he showed up in Chad’s exclusive Man.Power gym, having been ‘noticed’ somewhere about the place: these days, likely nominees get directed to Dave and Pete’s training cabin for ‘vetting’ and that’s exactly what Onne did. He’s into weights and fitness big time, not for bulk but for general strength: he likes wrestling but has a lot to learn, and hasn’t done gymnastics of any kind for ages but is keen enough to want to join the publicly-available club where several of us now coach, so he’s fitting in with our acrobatic nonsense quite well too. And he made the grade, so he had his initiation last night and Dave was chosen as his soul mate. Consequently I’ve been soothing Dave’s aches and pains somewhat this morning, and in bed last night!

There’s pages and pages about Chad’s gym, about initiations and all the crazy stuff that goes on there, in this first book, so we won’t go there again here. Onne is nearly 25, and straight, but tolerant of the majority gay membership and the assorted activities in which they choose to engage. No girlfriend as yet, although he speaks fondly of a “girl he left behind”. Good luck to him: you don’t have to be gay in order to enjoy Chad’s hospitality, and maybe the right girl will cross his path in Oak Ridge although we may not give him as much free time to find one as he thinks he’ll have! And also, the length of his assignment is not really clear: he hopes to return to Europe eventually. Meanwhile, he’s living in a hotel room whilst waiting to find a suitable ‘batchelor pad’ for rent.

So, Onne enjoys his weight training, whether it be cables:

…or free weights…

…body-weight exercise…

…or machines:

Onne loves his training and has the ‘cuts’ to prove it, like this guy:

…and he’s getting quickly into our rather fundamental style of wrestling (NHB, more or less):

And we’ve got him into the artistic gymnastics hall, but it will be awhile before he’s this good:

Onne seems to be a perfect example of our ethic: work hard (we assume he does, or he wouldn’t have gotten his place at the lab), play hard (definitely!) and eat the right stuff (well, I put that in because its on the poster). He’s a great guy who doesn’t seem at all perplexed by our rather overt gayness, nor our willingness to go naked in training most of the time. In fact, as he pointed out to us, nudity and The Netherlands kind of go together – even public swimming pools allow naked bathing after a certain hour (often 8pm) and no-one seems to think twice when guys and gals – and whole families – go naked on the beach.

Perhaps The Netherlands is an enlightened country. It’s given the world the exceptional gymnast (and model) Epke Zonderland for a start:

That’s a picture from 5 years ago, but he just gets better (in every way!).

So, welcome, Onne. Welcome to the Oak Ridge madhouse that is called Man.Power. You’ll fit in real good.

Today’s Bonus boy

… IS ON THE ROOF!

About tonycavanagh

Born Northampton UK; school Oxford UK and Oak Ridge Tennessee, where I met my wonderful partner Dave, also from UK. Oak Ridge is our main training base for acrobatics and circus stuff, but we also established a base in Wales (UK) to serve us when we are working in Europe. Our 'story', of finding gay love, learning the acrobatics trade and then of how we got shot at during our show (and worse was to follow - just to prove that the risks of being an acrobat are not always the most obvious ones!) are now available in my three books 'Loving the Boy', 'The Power of Love' and 'Against All Odds'. Links available on most blog posts. Actually, waiting for the imminent arrival of the first printed copies was far scarier than anything we do in performance. A fourth book - not about us but exploring the sadness of a gay Native American boy denied his true identity - is currently with an agent for evaluation. watch for 'Let The Future Find Me' in due time. And now to book five... another boy, another quest... seems its always boys...
