Later on Saturday… A Contortionary Tale…

Following our dip in the Clinch River, ending the previous post

…Clare needed to go home, whilst Steve invited Leo and me to join his family for lunch. After a leisurely chat and relaxation after the morning’s activities, Billy declared his wish to return to our cabin for more weight training.

So Chris came too, he and Leo relaxing in our yard in their shorts, sunbathing and generally clowning around.

A bit like that, and some play fighting too. I helped Dave’s dad with some yard work. Then, a distraction. A bike bell ‘pinged’ as our recently acquired friend Sammy Three Rivers swirled into the yard. Shirtless and barefoot as usual, he was expecting Ivo to be around for a session of training their hair-hanging and contortion act. He had forgotten about the competition at the gymnastics centre which would keep Ivo occupied until late evening.

I was reminded of that day 13 years before when I first arrived into the same yard, also ‘pining’ a bicycle bell, seeking Dave following his invitation to some unspecified ‘training’.This one also in e-book It was a day that was going to utterly change my life, both in terms of the ‘training’ – a severe session of acrobatics which I was absolutely not expecting and not in condition for – and in terms of the start of my loving relationship with Dave, as well as his wider circle of gay sporty friends who would eventually form a nucleus called Tuan Jie. ‘Strength through brotherhood’, or words to that effect. Something which, subsequently,Cover2 Thumb would be our salvation when threatened, first by a guy with a gun, and secondly by something much more sinister related to one of our very dear friends Zach, absolutely through no fault of his own. The book covers can be clicked upon for more on thisand, finally... (and e-books are available too!). Don’t I always seem to work those in? Well, there’s not so much money to be made as an acrobat, and rookie authors need to eat…

…anyway, as you can see, I’m easily sidetracked. I suggested that ‘3R’, as we call him, could do his own hair thing anyway: I would assist him and help push his body around into the complex contortions he is capable of. So he and I went into the cabin, and he slipped off his cut-offs to reveal the black jock he usually trained in. Given that the rest of almost always trained naked, I had been surprised by his ‘affection’ to cover himself, especially as he was self-declared gay. But, now I realised. in the presence of other guys, he developed a massive erection which he felt he needed to conceal. That, much to the point, was now very obvious.

‘3R, I said, ‘I think you could use some help with that.’ Our Tuan Jie rules, which govern safe sex between our closed group, don’t forbid a little oral with others. Billy had carried some benches and weights outside so that he could work on his tan as well as his muscles, which left the cabin free. So I ushered 3R inside and locked the cabin door…

3R almost cried with relief and thanks, and then came over all embarrassed as I, too, succumbed… but not before assuring him that this was perfectly natural with gay guys and he shouldn’t be bothered by it when with his new friends. But he is still in an emotional tangle over the reaction of his reservation to their discovery of his homosexuality, and (I’m sure) still deeply affected by the previous loss of his parents in an accident. We all feel strongly for him, and wish him a secure and safe life in the future, whatever he decides to do.

Eventually, I decided that he probably had overcome his embarrassment and that we could maybe do a little training now. But first, he reached into his shoulder bag and handed me a gift – an elaborate and beautiful wood carving of some sort of spiritual being. ‘I made this for you,’ he said, simply, as if not expecting thanks. carved antlerBut, for me, it was a wonderful gift – he has clearly a huge talent for this stuff, and he told me that it was a copy of a traditional design usually carved in bone. Apparently he is an ‘Etowah’, a tribe which seems to have some issues in being recognised by the State of Tennessee – I need to do some research here – but he said that the design comes from Delaware… I need to unravel this some more. But not right there and then. Maybe I need to unravel ‘3R’ first – I’ll spare you naked pictures, and go to the archives…

These are positions that I have difficulty with (to say the least) whereas 3R just bends and then bends some more. Our acrobatic endeavours give us too much muscle now for many of the contortion ‘tricks’ – you have to make the choice – one way or the other. And even 3R wants to put on some muscle now – I think he’s been comparing his body with the others in the gym and feels way too skinny to be a contender in the ‘gay clan’ or something – a feeling of insecurity which is definitely not justified. We’re still slowly finding out more about what makes him tick…

Some inspiration for the ‘lifters’, to finish…

…and, finally, a bit of contortion on the part of two gay guys, one of whom has hair uncannily like 3R – could it be that someone in Chad’s gym has had their camera ready? No, because this guy is way, way, bulkier than our 3R!

About tonycavanagh

Born Northampton UK; school Oxford UK and Oak Ridge Tennessee, where I met my wonderful partner Dave, also from UK. Oak Ridge is our main training base for acrobatics and circus stuff, but we also established a base in Wales (UK) to serve us when we are working in Europe. Our 'story', of finding gay love, learning the acrobatics trade and then of how we got shot at during our show (and worse was to follow - just to prove that the risks of being an acrobat are not always the most obvious ones!) are now available in my three books 'Loving the Boy', 'The Power of Love' and 'Against All Odds'. Links available on most blog posts. Actually, waiting for the imminent arrival of the first printed copies was far scarier than anything we do in performance. A fourth book - not about us but exploring the sadness of a gay Native American boy denied his true identity - is currently with an agent for evaluation. watch for 'Let The Future Find Me' in due time. And now to book five... another boy, another quest... seems its always boys...
