For Igor: Street Workout Dude

Whilst we’re still on the road, Pete remains back at base keeping the coaching going at the gymnastics centre, aided by our new friends Ion (Romanian former gymnast) and Igor (Russian former street workout guy). They’re both working in nuclear physics for a year at the government lab in Oak Ridge, but delighted to get the chance to get back in a gym in their spare time and happy to cover loads of coaching slots in evenings and weekends whilst we’re away.

We greatly admire the street workout facilities prominent in former Soviet countries, and the dedication and training that the lads put in. So this post celebrates that!

The bars don’t have to be on the street, of course…

By the way, blue and yellow are the Ukrainian national colours and almost all of their bars are painted that way.

Hanging from the back of the neck is a skill worth practicing, if you don’t mind a little pain!

…and here’s a good flex exercise:

Work on the ‘flag’:

Loops are useful until you improve the skills:

…and you need good shoulder flexibility:

It’s always more fun with a group of like-minded mates:

…and you’ll certainly end up looking good:

Our own fascination with fitness, gym, acrobatics and so forth is well-described in the three books in my so-called ‘Living the Dream’ series (the third is on those bookseller shelves now!) but beware: there is abundant gay lifestyle stuff in there too! Click on the links below for more information!

Loving the Boy: ISBN 978-1-907732-30-0

The Power of Love: ISBN 978-1-907732-41-6

Against All Odds: 978-1-908645-35-7

So, whilst we finish off our mini tour with the Circus, Igor and Ion are helping to ‘mind our shop’ at the gymnastics coaching center, and will continue to do so when Dave and I head over to UK shortly. Very many thanks, guys.

About tonycavanagh

Born Northampton UK; school Oxford UK and Oak Ridge Tennessee, where I met my wonderful partner Dave, also from UK. Oak Ridge is our main training base for acrobatics and circus stuff, but we also established a base in Wales (UK) to serve us when we are working in Europe. Our 'story', of finding gay love, learning the acrobatics trade and then of how we got shot at during our show (and worse was to follow - just to prove that the risks of being an acrobat are not always the most obvious ones!) are now available in my three books 'Loving the Boy', 'The Power of Love' and 'Against All Odds'. Links available on most blog posts. Actually, waiting for the imminent arrival of the first printed copies was far scarier than anything we do in performance. A fourth book - not about us but exploring the sadness of a gay Native American boy denied his true identity - is currently with an agent for evaluation. watch for 'Let The Future Find Me' in due time. And now to book five... another boy, another quest... seems its always boys...
