Fit for Purpose

Roger, Ellie and their two kids arrive at Cefn Derwen tomorrow. Roger my old school mate from Oxford, ex gymnast, and Ellie who was captain of hockey. So they’re all sporty too, and anxious to see how our ‘home’ gym has developed here.

We started with a sheep shed with a concrete floor, bought some mats, benches and few second-hand free weights, let the local fit lads and girls use the place for a small fee and used the income to invest in a few machines. It’s not at all bad, really.

Never Back Down - filmstill

We added a few old mattresses as ‘crash mats’ for tumbling practice, a few chairs to chill in, and there we are. We can do serious stuff…

…chill out and fool around…

…move outside when the weather favours (but not perhaps with the large audience shown here – we just have a few sheep gazing at us!)…

We’re looking to get a couple of pieces of conventional gymnastics apparatus too, as cast-offs from a gym in South Wales…

…which will make Roger and my other old gymnastics mate Colin (joining us at the weekend with his family) happy. And not forgetting the swimming opportunities, both river…

…and, about one hour’s drive away, a sandy beach…

!!!tumblr_lb4kgs89MA1qbyjjco1_1280So, ‘entertainment’ is guaranteed for all, and for all ages under appropriate supervision! Ellie has specific plans, for it was she who persuaded Colin and Roger to wrestle Dave and I naked in her brother’s flat some years ago (see The Power of Love) – and then joined in, along with Colin’s then girlfriend (now wife) Natasha! No inhibitions with this lot then, although with everyone’s kids present, clearly there will be limits, at least until after bedtime.

Roger, Colin and I go back to school days in Oxford and we’ve been close friends ever since. We even persuaded Colin to join us for some modelling work one time  (see Against All Odds), although none of us like the palaver that seems to go with that, and we’ve hardly done any since.

But we’re all into checking out each other’s muscles, seeing what we can still achieve, and so on… and, at least, trying to stay looking good:

And I think that we’ve succeeded in that, the job now being to encourage and shape the next generation of athletes (collectively, we have six of them!), inspiring clean living, healthy eating and plenty of exercise so that they can be proud of how they look and what they can do…

Special OfferSo there we are. We’re all enjoying a huge family break here at Cefn Derwen in Wales – made possible (although we own the place) only because a number of families cancelled their holiday rental plans in expectation of awful weather following the dismal spring! Their loss, given the fabulous weather than eventually showed up, and our gain. The trilogy of books was finished here, just over one year ago, again in fabulous weather (although it didn’t last long). The guy who finally persuaded me to publish, and helped so much with the writing style and editing, lives just a few miles away. He is now encouraging me to embark on a new project, in which we are only minor characters and the focus lies elsewhere, exploring what happens when your rather special community kicks you out because you are gay. I wrote one chapter, and it seems to be going OK, so we shall see. I definitely have a ‘fit for purpose’ title – LET THE FUTURE FIND ME – what do you reckon? Catchy, huh?

Holiday reading offer to the left, and e-books available also!

About tonycavanagh

Born Northampton UK; school Oxford UK and Oak Ridge Tennessee, where I met my wonderful partner Dave, also from UK. Oak Ridge is our main training base for acrobatics and circus stuff, but we also established a base in Wales (UK) to serve us when we are working in Europe. Our 'story', of finding gay love, learning the acrobatics trade and then of how we got shot at during our show (and worse was to follow - just to prove that the risks of being an acrobat are not always the most obvious ones!) are now available in my three books 'Loving the Boy', 'The Power of Love' and 'Against All Odds'. Links available on most blog posts. Actually, waiting for the imminent arrival of the first printed copies was far scarier than anything we do in performance. A fourth book - not about us but exploring the sadness of a gay Native American boy denied his true identity - is currently with an agent for evaluation. watch for 'Let The Future Find Me' in due time. And now to book five... another boy, another quest... seems its always boys...
