Massage Masterclass

massage 1My temporary roomie here just gave me a fantastic massage!! Don’t worry, Dave, its all in a good cause…

We spent several hours yesterday on this gymnastics coaching program here in Idaho with a couple of doctors and therapists learning ‘all there is to know’ about how the athlete’s body works. Anatomy, muscle behaviour, tendons, ligaments, the lot. And learning how to use massage to benefit the muscles and joints after they have been stressed (and over-stressed). Fascinating stuff.

Quite early on in the day one of the therapists asked for a couple of volunteers to strip down to their underpants and let her use them as ‘dummies’ for all the demonstrations. Well, you know me: never keep my shirt on  if I can find an excuse to take it off. So I broke the ‘never volunteer for anything’ rule and, following my example, Charlie (that’s the roomie, comes from Washington State) volunteered too. Not only did we get the full treatment from most of the other candidates (and, of course, a chance later to work on some of them), decided to practice our new skills on each other when we finally got time to ourselves.

massage 2The ‘practical’ sessions also included working with the feet – a Thai method apparently. I knew it was used in other countries like India. Some folks think there are ‘energy lines’ in the body (see pic on left) which you need to work too, but our teachers here think that’s a load of tosh. But, as regular readers either of this blog or the books will know, I have something of a foot fetish, and I’ll be trying out my new ‘skills’ on everyone back in Oak Ridge just as soon as I get back. I still think that Zach is the absolute master when it comes to massage, though, and he never had any formal training at all. But there are old biddies coming into Maisie’s ‘beauty’ emporium who have been asking for him to treat them for years…

And just to set one more record straight, Dave, Charlie is ‘straight’ and is missing his girl friend…! Just like I’m missing you…

Tomorrow we’re back in the gym, this time to improve our understanding of the use of bodyweight training to assist gymnasts. Hopefully some more ‘hands-on’ experiences to come! If you’re in any doubt that we enjoy hands-on experiences, you only need to look into these:

Loving the Boy: ISBN 978-1-907732-30-0

The Power of Love: ISBN 978-1-907732-41-6

Against All Odds: ISBN 978-1-908645-35-7

…gay love, gym and acrobatics and a bit of adventure.

Regular readers will probably expect some pictures of the sort of bodies we’d like to get on the massage table… so here goes then:

There you are – a few suitable cases for treatment…

Charlie and I are going for a beer in a few minutes, but not until he’s finishing working on my shoulders as I sit here typing. He’s a little surprised by the content here, but still keen to have my toes work on his shoulders a little before we leave…

About tonycavanagh

Born Northampton UK; school Oxford UK and Oak Ridge Tennessee, where I met my wonderful partner Dave, also from UK. Oak Ridge is our main training base for acrobatics and circus stuff, but we also established a base in Wales (UK) to serve us when we are working in Europe. Our 'story', of finding gay love, learning the acrobatics trade and then of how we got shot at during our show (and worse was to follow - just to prove that the risks of being an acrobat are not always the most obvious ones!) are now available in my three books 'Loving the Boy', 'The Power of Love' and 'Against All Odds'. Links available on most blog posts. Actually, waiting for the imminent arrival of the first printed copies was far scarier than anything we do in performance. A fourth book - not about us but exploring the sadness of a gay Native American boy denied his true identity - is currently with an agent for evaluation. watch for 'Let The Future Find Me' in due time. And now to book five... another boy, another quest... seems its always boys...
