‘Here is the News…’

‘What’s the new news from the new court…?’ says Oliver in Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’. I’m just showing off about that, but it’ll help to explain the little rant which follows…

Son Leo was born in America to an American mum and has lived here for 12 years. Unsurprisingly, he has an American accent and uses American spelling and speech. I put up with eccentric spelling and weird use of words most of the time because I have little choice… despite my efforts to impose some Oxford English (which is where I went to school!). The single word which really gets my goat is ‘NEWS’. Or, as they say here, ‘NOOZ’. I tell Leo constantly that it is pronounced ‘NYEWS’ in ‘proper’ English, which he hears when he goes to the UK. ‘Like the Russians pronounce “HET” as ‘NYET’‘, says Dave, unhelpfully.

Jaymee (Dave’s daughter) then pipes up. ‘But Uncle Tony…’ (she calls me that because it is logical rather than exactly true, but the books [below] will explain…) ‘… when we go to Wales, “noo” is “NEWYDD” as in “Papur newydd” for ‘NOOZ-PAPER’ ‘cos Welsh people say “Noo-yth”…’ – which is perfectly true…

At which point Leo comes back with ‘And “Papur Ty Bach” is “Toilet Paper”,’ which is also true, and the kids fall about laughing because they know it translates literally as ‘Paper for the little house…’

I gave up.

And we all ended up collapsing with laughter in a heap on the floor. Like this lot:

Cover1 ThumbCover2 ThumbIf you want to know how I, as a gay boy with a loving partner, come to have a son anyway (and my partner a daughter), well it is all in here. The decision to ‘go for it’ ends the first book and the denoument is in the second…

Kids, eh? Happily they didn’t get involved in the third book, in which we all got a bit messed up with some really nasty people – all now happily resolved…Cover 3 Thumb

So, are we Brits a bit ‘out in the cold’ here in Tennessee…

It’s been a bit like that here recently, but the snow is now gone… more likely, we’ve been cosying up a bit in a loving gay community most of the time…

…and, in the knowledge that we’ve trained hard, we can take time out to admire the fitness results in others…

So I’ve given up on changing my boy for today. Looking forward to some comfort later, though, from the boyfriend… see ya next time…

About tonycavanagh

Born Northampton UK; school Oxford UK and Oak Ridge Tennessee, where I met my wonderful partner Dave, also from UK. Oak Ridge is our main training base for acrobatics and circus stuff, but we also established a base in Wales (UK) to serve us when we are working in Europe. Our 'story', of finding gay love, learning the acrobatics trade and then of how we got shot at during our show (and worse was to follow - just to prove that the risks of being an acrobat are not always the most obvious ones!) are now available in my three books 'Loving the Boy', 'The Power of Love' and 'Against All Odds'. Links available on most blog posts. Actually, waiting for the imminent arrival of the first printed copies was far scarier than anything we do in performance. A fourth book - not about us but exploring the sadness of a gay Native American boy denied his true identity - is currently with an agent for evaluation. watch for 'Let The Future Find Me' in due time. And now to book five... another boy, another quest... seems its always boys...
