Closing the Gym Door

well equipped

Much as we love our little gym set-up here in Wales, it’s not as well equipped as that! Interestingly, through writing about it on here, some guys have got the impression that it is, and have asked to become regulars or ‘members’. One guy even wanted to drive here from Hereford, which  is over 60 miles away.

I’ve probably made it sound more enticing than it really is. And our local helper Neil, a farm lad, and his friends, do come here pretty much whenever they feel like it.

The problem with other ‘drop-ins’ or ‘members’ is that we are really remote up here AND we are not here all that much. If we actually lived here, it would be great to welcome ya’ll. But most of the year our place is a holiday ‘let’, and cars showing up on the track at unpredictable times (especially late at night, which seems to have been a mysteriously popular time) and folks letting themselves into the barn really is too much of a disturbance for most visitors to the house who come here for real peace and quiet. We’ve had complaints, and possibly lost future re-bookings as a result.

Neil was ‘managing’ it as best he could, but Dave and I have reluctantly taken the decision that, whilst Neil and co can stay, because they know when to keep clear and when its OK (and his mum looks after the place for us anyway), we can’t any more accept other ‘guests’ coming to train. Sorry guys, but as long as we live in USA most of the year and not here, it is the only practical solution. The income stream from gym users was useful, but we need to maintain the (bigger) income stream from vacationers.

Cover1 ThumbCover2 ThumbCover 3 ThumbIncome streams are important for all of us! A nice income stream was one of the hopes when I wrote 750,000 words in these books: just had a royalty statement from the publisher and its a bit – well, pathetic, really, considering how many clicks on the covers and links there have been! Come on, guys: show your appreciation for the pictures, at least, by having a read, even if it is e-book version (which earn me less still, and you have to wait years to get paid by Amazon, if ever!). Actually, while I’m in UK, I’ll do a special deal on signed copies: all 3 for £25 postage paid in UK if anyone prepared to send cash here (e-mail me for details

So now I’ll encourage you all, especially the gym rats who would have liked to sample the Cefn Derwen play-barn, such as it is, with some of our regular inspirational pictures. Don’t despair, lads, there are some decent gyms around in Mid Wales – try ‘R3action’ for starters in Llandrindod…he’s on Facebook. Meanwhile, let’s go with the chiselled look:

Maybe it’s time to revise the gym rules:

Where’s the one that says ‘no shirts allowed and less is acceptable’…? Of course, if it’s your own equipment in your own basement, you can do what the hell you like:

His multi-station seems to be rusting, and the upended dumbbell likewise.

Rusty weight plates, and a clothes rack for pull-ups! OK, I’ve seen worse… even if you can’t afford to plaster the walls, you can at least keep the kit polished…

Never pass a bar without doing some pull-ups (the Russian ‘street workout’ ethic):

If you’ve got it, flaunt it:

smoothie green

smothie red

A bit of work (well, maybe, a LOT of work in some cases!) is all it takes. Be inspired: seek out your local friendly gym (or get some equipment yourself) and don’t be afraid to ask for advice – even here! We’ll do our best! Especially if you fancy a read…

About tonycavanagh

Born Northampton UK; school Oxford UK and Oak Ridge Tennessee, where I met my wonderful partner Dave, also from UK. Oak Ridge is our main training base for acrobatics and circus stuff, but we also established a base in Wales (UK) to serve us when we are working in Europe. Our 'story', of finding gay love, learning the acrobatics trade and then of how we got shot at during our show (and worse was to follow - just to prove that the risks of being an acrobat are not always the most obvious ones!) are now available in my three books 'Loving the Boy', 'The Power of Love' and 'Against All Odds'. Links available on most blog posts. Actually, waiting for the imminent arrival of the first printed copies was far scarier than anything we do in performance. A fourth book - not about us but exploring the sadness of a gay Native American boy denied his true identity - is currently with an agent for evaluation. watch for 'Let The Future Find Me' in due time. And now to book five... another boy, another quest... seems its always boys...
