You Don’t Have to be Gay…

… to be a ‘paedophile’…

Just a granddad of 70!

Sorry, but my rant against collective hysteria begun yesterday continues. Bigotry not just against gay men, but any man; the madness is spreading and now any “unaccompanied man” is being seen as a threat to kids.

See any ‘threat’ here?

An innocent (and I have to say rather dishy) guy sunning himself, or a predator to any kids who happen to come down to the water to watch the boats or to swim?

This guy, alone on the beach…

…lying in wait for any kids who happen to wander off from their family parties? Of course not, these are upright guys enjoying their lives openly and without any doubt, lawfully. But what about older guys? They won’t be out on their own somewhere where kids go, without good reason…

Enter Mr Matthew Richards, from UK. Having taken his granddaughter to a falconry centre a couple of weeks earlier, and missed some of the things he was personally interested in (he is is passionate about birds of prey, apparently), he returned, alone, and was refused admission for child protection reasons…

In my country (UK) at the moment, there is a witch hunt amongst 70 and 80yo ‘celebrities’ for sex crimes allegedly committed many years ago. The public is feasting on this gleefully as some convictions are achieved (Rolf Harris, for example), all in the wake of the admittedly disgusting Jimmy Saville scandal.

But where is this going? Are unaccompanied men no longer to be allowed to stroll in the park? Or catch a bus in case there are unaccompanied schoolchildren on board…

And you don’t even have to be gay to get this nonsense. Seems it is OK though if we hunt in packs…

…but wait! OMG! They’re not wearing shirts! Quick! Round up the kids…

Well, it seems that this practice of refusing to admit unaccompanied adults (not just men!!) to family centres like theme parks is spreading. USA also (well, to be fair, they usually set the trend in daft issues).

I am gay, I have a kid who I would lay down my life for is someone tried anything on him, but I remain, inexplicably, a suspect, simply for being a man if I am out on my own. This could have made sense perhaps in Orwells’ 1984, but we are now in 2014 and things are much worse than just Big Brother.

Bravo, Mr Matthew Richards, for making it an issue and getting international press coverage as a result.

Meanwhile, our gay band continues to entertain families in the circus here, bare-chested, bare-footed, showing off our alleged muscles and acrobatic skills to kids. Perhaps their parents tell them not to look.

OK, today’s rant over, but please be aware, I haven’t started on the subject of being seen around with bare feet yet. That comes next!

Meanwhile, we celebrate the active young male body, as ever.

About tonycavanagh

Born Northampton UK; school Oxford UK and Oak Ridge Tennessee, where I met my wonderful partner Dave, also from UK. Oak Ridge is our main training base for acrobatics and circus stuff, but we also established a base in Wales (UK) to serve us when we are working in Europe. Our 'story', of finding gay love, learning the acrobatics trade and then of how we got shot at during our show (and worse was to follow - just to prove that the risks of being an acrobat are not always the most obvious ones!) are now available in my three books 'Loving the Boy', 'The Power of Love' and 'Against All Odds'. Links available on most blog posts. Actually, waiting for the imminent arrival of the first printed copies was far scarier than anything we do in performance. A fourth book - not about us but exploring the sadness of a gay Native American boy denied his true identity - is currently with an agent for evaluation. watch for 'Let The Future Find Me' in due time. And now to book five... another boy, another quest... seems its always boys...
