“Keep Calm and Carry On!”

It was quite difficult to get our two youngsters Leo and Jaymee to go off to school as normal this morning. They were, of course, still ‘buzzing’ at being TV performers on Saturday on the same TV station on which we first featured over 12 years ago! The ‘variety hour’ on which they appeared as the final act went like clockwork, not just for them but the whole thing. The audience (and we had packed in quite of lot of our supporters!) were fantastic, the company was delighted and, naturally, the video file is now in the family archives. Dave and I were stunned (and slightly embarrassed) that the station dug out some old footage of us (“Look what their fathers used to do!”) which was intercut with the filming they did locally of them training with us and shown to the studio audience during the live taping.

So now Leo is more hyper than ever, whilst Jaymee has got over her disillusionment of being “the only girl having to go training” instead of going to parties… as I mentioned before, suddenly some of her pals are showing interest in acrobatics too, and this new experience has given her a huge confidence boost that it is all worth the effort. So Dave can relax now – he was rather bothered that after years of her training to be an excellent balancer and tumbler, it would all be lost. And she does like wielding the sledgehammer to crack cinder blocks on her “brother’s” stomach (she thinks of Leo as a brother because they have grown up together from day 1 – the books explain all that).

So it’s “all go” on the fitness and training front again. Whew!

(adding a bit of extra pressure there!)

(and there!)

So, business as normal. Leo still has a tendency to boast and to show off, and it does him no good at all. The wrestle coach tells me is always doing handstands in the middle of wrestle training, and his team-mates sulk because he can do them so much better than they can… all bad for discipline and bad for him making and keeping friends. Jaymee never did show off in that way, and has many more (non athletic!) friends. So I had to give Leo a good talking to this morning before they set off, along the lines of “Yes, you’re very special, but just keep it to yourself, right?”. We’ll see!

(you might want to turn that one a quarter turn, although it still looks a bit strange if you do: it’s a bench press, obviously)

About tonycavanagh

Born Northampton UK; school Oxford UK and Oak Ridge Tennessee, where I met my wonderful partner Dave, also from UK. Oak Ridge is our main training base for acrobatics and circus stuff, but we also established a base in Wales (UK) to serve us when we are working in Europe. Our 'story', of finding gay love, learning the acrobatics trade and then of how we got shot at during our show (and worse was to follow - just to prove that the risks of being an acrobat are not always the most obvious ones!) are now available in my three books 'Loving the Boy', 'The Power of Love' and 'Against All Odds'. Links available on most blog posts. Actually, waiting for the imminent arrival of the first printed copies was far scarier than anything we do in performance. A fourth book - not about us but exploring the sadness of a gay Native American boy denied his true identity - is currently with an agent for evaluation. watch for 'Let The Future Find Me' in due time. And now to book five... another boy, another quest... seems its always boys...
